Architecture 2030 guest edited the January 2020 issue of ARCHITECT Magazine. The Carbon Issue is dedicated to the urgent need for climate action, with decarbonization strategies for materials, design, practice, and policy.

Implementing Rapid and Dramatic Carbon Reductions in the Global Built Environment

The CarbonPositive’20 CONFERENCE and EXPO provided a how-to for planning, designing, building and manufacturing a CarbonPositive future – where buildings, developments and entire cities are constructed to use sustainable resources, generate surplus renewable energy, and convert atmospheric carbon into durable materials and products.

To meet this challenge, sessions, speakers and exhibitors showcased in-depth innovative materials and advanced construction methods, latest design tools and best practices, and leading edge policy efforts and planning practices.

Opening Keynote:
Timing is Everything: The Path to CarbonPositive

The climate emergency requires us to act now. Architecture 2030 Founder and CEO Edward Mazria framed the challenges of the building sector now and over the next 30 years, identified the critical interim and long term carbon targets, and showed how we begin to address them through planning and policy, design and practice, building and manufacturing.

Keynote: It’s Electrifying! Achieving ZERO Now Through Electrification and Renewables

Cole Roberts highlighted the futures of energy and electricity, and Panama Batholomy made a strong case against the continued use of natural gas.

Keynote: Network for Change: The Global Embodied Carbon Movement

Kate Simonen brought embodied carbon advocates onstage to show the strength of the local, people-powered initiatives that have sprung up to take on the challenge of reducing embodied carbon, and stressed the importance of bringing new people into the movement.

Keynote: Spotlight on the Global South: CarbonPositive Design Tools for Global Markets 

Over the next 30 years, the majority of the world’s building construction will occur in cities in the Global South. Prashant Kapoor shared approaches and instruments of practice that will be most effective in realizing better performing and low carbon buildings in emerging markets.
